An investigation has been launched after a worker was injured at the Cottam Power Station demolition site near Retford.
Emergency services, including an ambulance and three paramedics, were called to the site at 9:03 AM on 10th February. The injured worker was later airlifted to Sheffield Northern General Hospital for treatment.
The demolition firm, Brown & Mason Ltd, confirmed the incident and stated that a full investigation is underway to determine the cause. A spokesperson said:
“Our worker is being monitored by medical professionals, and a full investigation is being carried out to understand the incident.”
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has been informed, but at this stage, it has not taken a formal role in the investigation. However, the agency stated that its position could change if it receives a formal report under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR).
Nottinghamshire Police also attended the scene at 9:18 AM after receiving reports of an “industrial incident.” The force confirmed that the injured man was taken to hospital and that the HSE has “primacy over the investigation.”
Cottam Power Station’s Demolition
Cottam Power Station, which officially closed on 30 September 2019, is in the process of being demolished. The site, owned by EDF Energy, is being cleared following the station’s decommissioning. EDF Energy confirmed that none of its staff were involved in the incident, as only a small team remains on-site.
The coal-fired power station, which first opened in 1968, was capable of generating electricity for 3.7 million homes at its peak. Although it was originally designed to operate for 30 years, its life was extended until 2019 as part of the UK’s energy transition.
